Incident 44 of 2024:-
24/07/24, 16.18, Church Beck, SD296979
An organised group was ghyll scrambling in Church Beck when one of the youths fell onto rocks on the stream bed, causing possible multiple injuries. Cumbria Police called us out, and we despatched two Land Rovers to the track beside the beck. Helimed 58 (Great North Air Ambulance) from Langwathby landed close by, and its crew joined us.
The casualty was assessed, strong pain relief given, and he was placed in a vacuum mattress (which acts as a body splint) onto our stretcher. Meanwhile, a rope system had been set up to raise the stretcher out of the gorge to flatter ground. We then carried the stretcher up the last part to the track, and then down to the Helimed. He was flown to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment. We hope that the crew got back to Langwathby before the wet weather closed in.
16 volunteer team members attended, and the incident lasted for 2 hours and 30 minutes.
