Incident 51 of 2024:-

On a cool and dry day, three ladies were descending from the Old Man of Coniston when one had a walking boot issue and slipped at Goat’s Hawse, injuring her ankle. Hillgoers helped with first aid (thank you!), and she managed to descend from the Hawse to Goat’s Water before being unable to continue and phoning for help. Cumbria Police called us out and we despatched all 3 of our Land Rovers to the rock step on the Walna Scar track, and walked up from there. It was clear, however, that we did not have the numbers for the long stretcher carry down, so we asked our neighbouring team, Duddon and Furness MRT, to assist.
On our arrival, the casualty was assessed, the ankle splinted, and packaged in our stretcher for the carry. When enough Duddon members arrived, we carried her though the rocks at the edge of Goat’s Water, and then put the wheel under the stretcher for the remaining carry to the Walna Scar track. She was transported to her party’s vehicle and transferred into it as her friend agreed to drive them to Furness General Hospital.
10 volunteer team members from Coniston MRT attended, as well as one Team Supporter, and 9 from Duddon and Furness MRT – thanks very much to all, as we couldn’t have done it without you. The incident lasted 4 hours and 33 minutes.
