Old Man of Coniston

Incident 2 of 2025:-
20/01/25, 12:58, Old Man of Coniston, SD275980
On a cold, damp and foggy day, a man walking with his family up the Old Man of Coniston slipped and cut his head as he fell. Cumbria Police called us out, and we sent our 3 Land Rovers and a member’s own vehicle up to Bursting Stone Quarry. From there, we walked up to the casualty’s location, which was quite near to the top. He was assessed and his head wound bandaged, and then packaged into our stretcher for the steep carry-down.
After we reached the quarry, he was driven to our base and was met by a land ambulance. The paramedics assessed him and considered the man was well enough for his family to drive him to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary where there is a special facility for such injuries if needed.
17 volunteer team members attended for 3 hours and 40 minutes.
